Retention Factors among Non-Migrating Teachers in DepEd
Author/s: Emmanuel N. Pelesco |
Teachers who remain in the DepEd while facing difficulties in their profession are known as non-migrating teachers. These educators continue to be driven to work hard and stay with the organization. The three variables that contribute to teacher retention are growth needs, relatedness needs, and existence requirements. Thus, these elements support a teacher's well-being in the classroom on both a professional and personal level.
To evaluate work satisfaction and retention variables among non-migrating teachers in the Agusan del Sur A.C. Division of the DepEd for the 2023–2024 school year, a mixed-method study was carried out. Focus groups and survey questionnaires were used in both quantitative and qualitative study designs. Teachers' profiles, retention reasons (grouped into Existence Needs, Relatedness, and Growth Needs), and job satisfaction (including General Working Conditions, Pay and Promotion Potential, Skills and Abilities, Work Activities, and Work Relationships) were the three sections of the questionnaire.
Purposive random sampling was employed to gather qualitative data, while stratified random sampling was utilized to pick respondents for the quantitative survey. The overall job satisfaction of teachers and retention variables were found to be high in the results. Value and Recognition, External Factors, Challenges and Opportunities for Professional Development, Support and Professional Development, Student Discipline, and Classroom Management were some of the themes that emerged from the focus group conversations. Salary, workload, new surroundings, and professional growth were among the deciding factors for relocation; family and personal commitments, financial considerations, security, and contentment in the current setting were the reasons for staying.
There was no discernible correlation between the retention criteria and the profiles of the teachers. The researcher recommends interventions such as a Policy Brief for Non-Migrating Teachers in DepEd. These measures aim to address identified issues such as teachers’ health benefits and enhance job satisfaction and retention among teachers in the Division of Agusan del Sur.
